Quality of life and end-of-life planning

For families who’ve received a serious or terminal diagnosis and want to face what’s coming with intention rather than in a rush.

  • Initial intake and needs assessment (60 min)
  • Quality-of-life framework session — validated tools translated into plain language and your family’s own values (75 min)
  • End-of-life planning session — location, ceremony, aftercare, and preparing your family (60 min)
  • A written summary of your conversations and decisions, yours to keep
  • One follow-up check-in within 14 days
Presence · $475

Vigil and transition support

For families preparing for, or approaching, the euthanasia appointment. Preparation, presence on the day, and support in the hours and days that follow.

  • Pre-transition preparation session — what to expect, how to support children and other pets, and permission to feel what you feel (75 min)
  • In-person presence at the appointment — calm, unobtrusive support throughout (up to 3 hours, including travel)
  • Immediate support afterward, before you’re left to drive home (30–45 min)
  • Bereavement check-in within 7 days (45 min, virtual)
  • A curated grief resource package chosen for your family

Available in Calgary and area. This combination — preparation, presence, and follow-up together — isn’t currently offered anywhere else in Alberta.

Comfort · $595

Grief and bereavement support

For families after a loss, or already grieving before one. Grief education, coping tools, and companionship over six to eight weeks.

  • Intake and grief orientation — understanding your grief and mapping a plan (60 min)
  • Four individual or family sessions over 6–8 weeks (60 min each)
  • Grief education woven through: the human-animal bond, disenfranchised grief, age-specific grief responses, meaning-making
  • Reflection activities between sessions, drawn from the age-specific activity guide
  • A curated reading list and resource package
  • One mid-bundle check-in between sessions
  • Referral coordination to a registered counsellor if clinical support would serve you better

Available as adult-only, family, or child-centred. Children’s sessions use age-appropriate activities and expressive tools.

For Veterinary Teams

The following rates apply to clinics contracting Paws & Presence for team support, staff wellness, and client-facing programming. Available on-site or virtually.

Post-euthanasia team debrief $200 60–75 min — a structured conversation after a difficult case or a hard stretch. Space for your team to say what they carried, with someone who isn’t their manager and isn’t keeping score.
Compassion fatigue workshop $550 Half-day (3 hrs) — what it is, how it accumulates, and what actually helps. Built for veterinary teams, not adapted from human healthcare.
Mindset and feedback workshop $550 Half-day (3 hrs) — how teams talk to each other under pressure, and how feedback lands when everyone is depleted.
Difficult conversations workshop $550 Half-day (3 hrs) — prognosis, cost, quality of life, and the moment a family asks what you would do. Language your team can use when the conversation is hardest.
Custom workshop, incl. development and tailoring from $650 1–3 hrs — built around what your practice is actually dealing with. We’ll talk it through first.
Bereavement protocol development from $900 A written protocol for how your practice handles euthanasia appointments and the days around them: front-desk language, aftercare follow-up, and what gets given to families. Project-based, two rounds of revisions included.
Ongoing clinic partnership $475/mo Two debriefs a month, 1 workshop each quarter, and client-facing materials. For practices that want this handled rather than arranged case by case.

Referring families

There is no fee to refer. Published family rates and a free discovery meeting mean your team can hand over a card without vetting me first or worrying about what it will cost your client. Referral cards and a short team briefing are included — so whoever’s at the front desk on a hard afternoon knows what they’re offering.

The following applies to families and clinics alike.

Additional fees

Occasionally a cost falls outside what’s listed above. When it does, we talk about it first — nothing is added as a surprise.

Travel — in-person family sessions include travel within 40 km of central Calgary; beyond that, $0.72/km. On-site clinic work beyond Calgary and area is billed at actual travel and accommodation cost.

Third-party costs — any external services or materials are passed on at cost, with your approval first.

Rush requests — expedited turnaround may carry a fee, agreed before any work begins.

Cancellation

Circumstances change, and in this work they change quickly. Tell me as early as you can and we’ll sort it out.

Hourly and session work — less than 24 hours’ notice may be charged for the allocated time.

Paths and project work — cancellation within the first 14 days may be subject to a pro-rated fee.

Scope of practice

This work is psychoeducational and doula-based: grief education, compassionate presence, end-of-life planning support, and resource navigation. It is not clinical counselling or psychotherapy, not diagnosis or treatment of mental health conditions, and not a substitute for a registered psychologist, social worker, or counsellor. It is not crisis intervention, and it does not include medical advice about an animal’s care. My role sits around the care your vet or your team provides — never inside it.
