Privacy
What happens to what you tell me - in plain words, because you shouldn’t have to read legal language to find out.
The short version
I collect only what you choose to send me, I use it only to reply to you and to do the work you’ve asked for, and I don’t sell it, share it for advertising, or use it to follow you around the internet. This site has no analytics, no tracking pixels, and no advertising cookies of any kind.
What I collect
When you fill in the form on the contact page, you send me your name, email address, optionally a phone number, whether you’re getting in touch as a family member or a veterinary professional, and whatever you write in the message. That message often contains details about your animal, your family, and how you’re doing. I understand what it costs to write it.
If you email or call me directly, I have whatever that correspondence contains.
If you book a conversation, the booking is handled by Cal.com and you give your details to them - see below.
If you pay for something, the payment itself is handled by Stripe rather than by me - see Paying for something below.
That’s all. There is no account to create, no newsletter sign-up, and nothing collected quietly in the background while you read.
What I do with it
I read it, and I reply. If we go on to work together, I keep our correspondence so I know your animal’s name and your history without asking you to repeat it.
I don’t use it for anything else. I don’t add you to a mailing list. I don’t pass it to anyone, and I won’t use anything you’ve told me - or your animal’s story - in writing, teaching, or anywhere public, unless I’ve asked you and you’ve said yes.
Who else touches it
Running a website means a few companies handle your message on its way to me. Here is all of them, and what each one does:
- Cloudflare - hosts this site and delivers the pages. Like any web host, it records basic technical information such as IP addresses to keep the site up and to block attacks. Cloudflare also runs the spam check on the form (Turnstile), and forwards email sent to my @pawsandpresence.ca address.
- Resend - takes the form submission and turns it into the email that reaches me.
- Google - my inbox is Gmail, so your message is stored there once it arrives. This site also loads its typefaces from Google Fonts, which means Google sees the request your browser makes for them.
- Cal.com - runs the booking page. If you book, what you enter there goes to them under their own privacy policy.
- Stripe - handles payment, if you pay for something. See Paying for something below.
These companies are based in the United States, so your information is processed outside Canada and is subject to the laws there.
Paying for something
Nothing on this site asks you for money to read it, and the first conversation is always free. But if you book a paid session, buy a package for someone else, or I invoice your practice, a payment has to be taken - and that involves information the rest of this page doesn’t cover.
Payment is handled by Stripe, not by me. When you pay, you leave this site and enter your card details on a page belonging to Stripe. That page sets its own cookies, which it uses to complete the payment and to check the transaction isn’t fraudulent. Those cookies belong to Stripe and are covered by Stripe’s privacy policy, not this one.
I never see your card number. It goes to Stripe and stays there. What comes back to me is your name, your email address, the amount, the date, and the last four digits - enough to know the payment arrived and to give you a receipt. If your practice pays an invoice by pre-authorized debit, the same is true of your bank details: you give them to Stripe, and I don’t see them.
I keep the record of what was paid and when, because I’m required to - tax records in Canada are generally kept for seven years, which matches how long I keep everything else about work I’ve done.
This is used for the payment and nothing else. Not to advertise to you, not to build a profile of you, and not passed to anyone beyond what taking the money requires. Stripe is based in the United States, so this is processed outside Canada, the same as everything listed above.
Cookies
This site sets no cookies of its own, and no tracking cookies at all. Cloudflare’s spam check may store a small amount of information in your browser to confirm you’re a person rather than a bot. That’s the only thing of its kind here, and it isn’t used to identify you or to advertise to you.
The one exception sits on someone else’s page: if you go through to pay, Stripe’s checkout sets cookies of its own, as described just above. Booking through Cal.com works the same way. Neither of them can set a cookie while you are here reading.
How long I keep things
Enquiries that don’t become work: kept for up to a year, then deleted.
Correspondence and notes for people I’ve worked with: kept for up to seven years, which is the period Canadian businesses are generally expected to keep their records, then deleted.
If you’d rather I deleted something sooner, just ask.
What you can ask me for
You can ask me what I hold about you, ask for a copy, ask me to correct it, or ask me to delete it. Email me and I’ll do it - usually within a few days, and always within thirty.
If you ever think I’ve handled your information badly, please tell me first so I can put it right. You also have the right to complain to the Office of the Privacy Commissioner of Canada or to Alberta’s Office of the Information and Privacy Commissioner.
Children
This site is written for adults. I don’t knowingly collect information from children. Where I support a child, that’s arranged through their parent or guardian.
If this changes
If I change how any of this works, I’ll update this page and change the date below. If the change is a significant one and I’m already working with you, I’ll tell you directly rather than expecting you to notice.
